5 Children Dead, Others Injured in Van Zandt Crash

Ten people were thrown from the sport utility vehicle

Five children were killed and others were injured in a crash on Interstate 20 in Van Zandt County on Monday.

Investigators said 12 people were in a green GMC Envoy that rolled over east of Canton on Interstate 20 near Farm-to-Market 16. Ten people were thrown from the sport utility vehicle.

The Texas Department of Public Safety said five children were killed in the crash, including three girls, ages 13, 6 and 2; a 3-year-old; and another child.

Two other children were injured and taken to Children's Medical Center of Dallas. At least one adult was taken to a hospital in Tyler.

DPS said the SUV did not have enough seats for all 12 occupants. Of the 12 people in the car, at least nine were children.

Investigators said they do not know what caused the crash. The driver did not hit anything.

Officials told KLTV-TV that all the passengers in the vehicle were related and were headed from Marshall to Canton to visit Splash Kingdom.
