A spokesman for the North Texas Tollway Authority says construction on the Dallas North Tollway through Plano will start in June or July to widen the highway to four lanes. Board members unanimously approved funding the project during their Wednesday meeting.
In its monthly meeting, the NTTA board voted unanimously Wednesday to approve more than $135 million in contracts to fund the project that will add a fourth lane to each direction of traffic to the DNT.
The project also involves reworking the interchanges between the President George Bush Turnpike and the DNT, an area the NTTA describes as one of high traffic and prone to gridlock.

“It’s going to be a totally different interchange,” said spokesman Michael Rey, describing the reconfiguration. "You won’t get that bottleneck of cars trying to get on and get off, essentially in the same place.”
Rey said now that the money is approved, the work is expected to start in June or July.
It will take three years before drivers will reap the benefits, but, according to Rey, because of “orange cone construction fatigue” in Collin County, the NTTA is trying to do all the work in off peak hours and minimize driver impacts.
