Loop 820 Ranked North Texas' Biggest Bottleneck

A Tarrant County roadway is now considered the most congested area of the Metroplex.

The interchange where Loop 820 North meets state Highways 121 and 183 has been rated the worst traffic bottleneck in North Texas according to a real-time traffic information company called INRIX.

"We avoid it like the plague," Tarrant County resident Tommy Miller said. "You can't get anywhere any faster by taking 820/183 than you can just by using the service roads."

Thousands of commuters drive the congested highway interchange in Hurst each day.

"Coming back home, 5:30 or 6:00 p.m., it takes a long time to get home if you're coming 820," said commuter Mark Quintero. "I try to avoid it when I can."

The Texas Department of Transportation said a $2 billion project called the North Tarrant Express will eventually alleviate some of the congestion.

"This project will add four toll lanes, improve frontage roads and add auxiliary lanes," TXDOT spokesperson Michael Peters said.

Construction on the North Tarrant Express will begin in 2010, and should be complete in 2015.
