Drivers in Denton County and North Dallas County are getting a glimpse into the future of a long-running construction project.

Leaders at AGL Construction, TxDOT, and the 35Express project have created a virtual fly-through of what the freeway will look like and how it will function when the project is complete.

The 12 minute animation flies over the entire 30 mile project corridor from I-635 in Dallas to U.S. 380 in Denton and actually gives viewers a driver’s perspective of the future traffic flow.

Project Public Information Manager Kimberly Sims said the hope is to help drivers visually understand what they are doing in the $1.4 billion Phase 1 of the project and how it should function better when completed.

"They're seeing the shapes and the outlines of the interstate, but really to see what the final product will look like is something they're all waiting for,” said Sims.

The 35Express project began in October of 2013 and Sims said it is still on time to be complete in mid-2017; putting drivers at about the half-way point now.

EJ and Tristina Govan who live just off the southbound frontage road in Denton said the project hasn’t been as bad to live by as they expected, but that they look forward to that completion date when the stretch will function better and the extra traffic will, they hope, be gone from next to their home.

"Now it's like all this construction; it's traffic around the clock," said EJ.

Sims said drivers can expect to see some major improvements in the next few months as traffic lanes open at FM 407 and Corinth Parkway allowing drivers to again get from one side of the interstate to the other.

Work also continues on the new Lewisville Lake Bridge where decks are being installed and the gaps in the bridge are slowly filling in.

The new animation also gives a glimpse of that completed bridge which will double the traffic flow over the lake; an area that often sees heavy congestion in rush hour.

Drivers can personally view the 12 minute animation at 3 public meetings in the coming weeks:

    • Thursday 10/8 at the MCL Grand Theater in Lewisville at 6:30pm
    • Thursday 10/15 at the Denton Civic Center in Downtown Denton at 6:30pm
    • Monday 10/19 at the Farmers Branch City Hall at 6:30

After those meetings the video will be available on 35Express’s Youtube page for everyone to check out.

Sims encourages everyone to continue visiting the 35Express website for construction updates and to follow them on social media for traffic alerts.
