Environmental concerns have been raised about a plan to allow billboards up to 65 feet tall along some Texas highways.
The Texas Transportation Commission heard public testimony Tuesday in Austin, with written comments accepted through July 14. The panel by August is expected to decide on whether to adjust the current 42.5-feet height restriction.
The Austin American-Statesman reports the Texas Department of Transportation has proposed the change, which is supported by advertising companies, as part of an overhaul of billboard rules.
Katherine Romans, who manages landowner outreach for the Hill Country Alliance, says people don't need more billboards or taller billboards. The group supports protecting natural resources.
Billy Reagan with Reagan Outdoor Advertising says taller signs are needed because the speed of travel has increased and highways have expanded.
