Dallas North Tollway to Close This Weekend in Collin County

Major construction is scheduled for the Dallas North Tollway this weekend in Collin County.

All lanes in both directions of the DNT will be closed from 9 p.m. Friday until 5 a.m. Monday between Gaylord Parkway and Spring Creek Parkway.

The closure isn't only about easing traffic congestion. It also has to do with helping foot traffic.

Major construction scheduled on the Dallas North Tollway June 17-18 could have a big impact on commuters. The DNT will be closed between Spring Creek Parkway and Texas 121 as crews install beams at Legacy Drive.

Over the next year, the city of Plano plans to build a large sidewalk and bike path on the Legacy Drive bridge over the tollway. Those will connect the Shops at Legacy and Legacy West, which opened a couple weeks ago.

Right now there isn't a safe way to walk between the two busy developments, but this should change that.

"Oh, it's going to be tremendous. You can park your car on either side and walk across to visit all the different shops and restaurants, and also it'll help commuters and visitors bike across if that's what they want to do," said Peter Braster, director of special projects for the city of Plano.

Lexie Houghtaling helps North Texas drivers circumvent a major closure on Dallas North Tollway through the weekend.

The first phase of the project starts this weekend, as the North Texas Tollway Authority installs beams that will support a new u-turn lane for the overpass.

Traffic congestion is a major concern with about 20,000 jobs being added in Legacy West by the year 2020.

The city hopes this pedestrian path will encourage people to walk or bike to work.
