A new toll road that will connect Tarrant County to Johnson County is set to open this weekend.

The Chisholm Trail Parkway has been in the works for 50 years, so to see it finally open is a huge accomplishment.

Those who have worked on the project over the years met on Friday morning to celebrate the opening of the parkway.

"To open up south Tarrant County and connect to Johnson County this is a big day," said former Fort Worth mayor and North Texas Tollway Authority chairman Kenneth Barr.

All of the main lanes of the new Chisholm Trail Parkway will open on Sunday. The almost 28-mile road will connect downtown Fort Worth to Cleburne.

"It will take pressure off I-35W," said North Texas Tollway Authority spokesperson Michael Rey. "It will take pressure off southwest Fort Worth, so even if you never use this toll road, it's a win, win situation."

Along with helping traffic, the new parkway may also help the population grow in this area.

"There is no doubt there will be significant growth in Cleburne, and Johnson County, and all the cities down this way," said Barr.

There are not many toll roads in this area, so many people want to know how much it will cost to use it.

"If you go end to end on a toll tag it will be $4.91," explained Rey. "Obviously if you use zip cash or a picture of your license plate it will be 50% more."

Even though all the main lanes will be open on Sunday, there will still be some exit ramps that will need to be finished.

The NTTA plans to open the Chisholm Trail Parkway at 8 a.m. on Sunday.
