Reconstruction of freeways and DART rail extension underway

A seven year project to fix gridlock around the old Texas Stadium site is underway.

The Texas Stadium site has become a road construction yard for rebuilding the freeways and interchanges around it.
Reconstruction of Loop 12, Texas 114 and 183 Airport Freeway will take up to seven years in one of the busiest areas in North Texas.
“It’s really an exciting project for us,” said Michael Morris with the Regional Transportation Council. “These difficult transportation jobs take decades to put together.”
Work has begun on 114 and Loop 12. Demolition of businesses is underway for 183 widening. However, funding for 183 construction west of the stadium through Irving toward DFW Airport is still not finalized.
The interchanges between the highways around the old stadium site will use an entirely new design.
“You’ll have a direct connect that allows you to just easy flow as you go through, similar to what you have on the High 5,” said Texas Department of Transportation Dallas District Chief Engineer Bill Hale.
The High 5 is the five level interchange of I-635 and US 75 Central expressway that was completed several years ago in Dallas.
Drivers have been complaining for many years about rush hour traffic congestion on the Irving freeways around Texas Stadium.
“You’re going to be 20 minutes, 30 minutes going 5 minutes down the road,” said Sheri Lynch who works on 183. She worries now about construction delays.
“It will add another 30 minutes to your 30 minutes getting 5 minutes down the road,” she said.
Irving officials are optimistic about the future of the area.
Texas Stadium, the former home of the Dallas Cowboys, is scheduled to be demolished during the road construction. The City of Irving intends to redevelop the site with a mixed used project of homes, offices, commercial and retail businesses. A DART rail extension from Dallas to Irving’s Las Colinas and DFW Airport is also being constructed through the area.
