One person has died after an SUV collided into a car that was stopped on the shoulder of the Sam Rayburn Tollway in Coppell Monday afternoon.

Texas Department of Public Safety troopers responded just after 1 p.m. to the crash along the southbound lanes of the tollway near the Denton Tap Road overpass. There, they said a maroon BMW was stopped on the left shoulder, when a Cadillac SUV going southbound in the left lane traveled onto the shoulder, hit the concrete center barrier and then struck the rear of the BMW.

The cause for the SUV to leave the lane of travel has not been determined.

The driver of the BMW died at the scene, and a passenger in the Cadillac SUV was transported to the Medical Center of Plano for treatment of undisclosed injuries.

The driver of the SUV was not injured.

Investigators remained at the scene and southbound lanes of the tollway were still closed as of 3:25 p.m. Monday.
