Wednesday, Kroger discontinued its well-known double- and triple-coupons program in exchange for a new fuel discount program in the Houston market. When asked if it could make its way to the DFW area, Kroger public relations manager Kristal Howard replied, “That is a possibility.”
In the DFW area, Kroger doubles the value of manufacturer’s coupons up to and including $.50 face value and triples the value of manufacturers coupons up to and including $.39 face value when customers use the store’s Kroger Plus Card.
The grocery store also offers $.10 off per gallon of gas for every $100 a customer spends on qualifying grocery items at its fuel stations and participating Shell stations.
That program, which started in the 1980’s, was the same in Houston-- until Wednesday.
Here’s how Howard explains the new program launching at the Houston area:
"Houston customers will be able to save up to $1 per gallon at Kroger Fuel Centers in the greater Houston area through our new fuel accumulation program.
Our enhanced fuel rewards program will allow shoppers to accumulate their earned fuel points.
For each increment of 100 points they have earned, they’ll be awarded a discount up to $1 per gallon at Kroger Fuel Centers. Fuel points are based on shopping total before coupons and discounts are applied. For instance, if a customer’s total is $200 but the balance after coupons and discounts is $125, the shopper would be awarded 200 fuel points.
Through our partnership with Shell, shoppers will still be able to save $.10 per gallon at over 500 participating Shell locations in the Houston area when redeeming 100 earned fuel rewards points."
The change came after Kroger realized the growing popularity of digital coupons, mobile apps and manufacturers producing coupons valued at more than $.50.
“We feel it’s an ideal time to test out a new money-saving program and discontinue double/triple,” the company said in a news release.
While Howard did say it is possible this new program could end up launching in our area, she adds, “at this time we do not have plans to roll it out in DFW.”
