Facebook has launched a new feature where you can get deals, including free stuff at stores and restaurants. All you have to do is "check in."
Plenty of people already go online for coupons. Now you can get discounts and freebies on your smartphone, on the go. The Facebook Places application gives you a list of "nearby places" where you can find discounts. Just "check in" when you're inside the business to let your friends know where you are and you can redeem the deal immediately.
Gap is giving away a pair of jeans Friday to the first 10,000 customers to claim its deal. People who "check in" at Chipotle can get two entrees for the price of one during the second and third weekends in November. North Texas-based JCPenney is offering $10 off a $50 purchase.
"We want to reward our customers that are already inside JCPenney and tell their friends that they're shopping at JCPenney," said Kate Coultas, company spokesperson.
Some businesses give a donation on your behalf. When you "check in" at McDonald's, $1 goes to the Ronald McDonald House Charities.
"Deals like this make people come to a business to try it out to see if it's going to be worth it," said Facebook user Jesus Ramirez.
But not everyone wants to get on the bandwagon, even though it's free. Some fear "checking in" and publicizing their location will compromise privacy and safety.
For now, you can get Facebook deals on the iPhone and Android.
