Worth the Drive: McGehee's Restaurant in Marietta, Okla.

Catfish, catfish, catfish

Looking for a quick weekend getaway?  How about checking out McGehee's Catfish Restaurant in Marietta, Okla.?

This place is famous to Texans and Oklahomans alike. The family-owned restaurant is nestled in the country just on the other side of the Red River, with a fantastic view that overlooks the river. Rumor has it this place was built years ago to accomodate pilots in the area. The restaurant still has a small landing strip where pilots can fly in for some good home cookin'.

And the pond out back- well, that's where you get your catfish.

Even people who don't like catfish can't say no to this all-you-can-eat platter piled high with fried catfish filets, mounds of fries, hushpuppies, coleslaw and green tomatoes. It is outstanding! They have other things on the menu, but when you walk in, the waiter will most likely just go, "Y'all here for the catfish?" And say "Yes!" Families from all across Oklahoma and Northern Texas take time to make the drive to McGehee's.

On the weekends, I believe it's open from 1 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. But call ahead to double-check. The 1.5 hour drive from DFW (if it even takes that long) is well Worth the Drive. I promise, you won't regret it!
