A family-run Fort Worth company is finding favor with shoppers.
Salsa just may be one of the basic food groups in Texas, and Mrs. Renfro's satisfies the craving by producing 130 jars a minute in 28 flavors.
"Everybody has a hot, medium and mild, and we decided we needed flavors if we were going to get in," CEO Bill Renfro said.
"We're not a threat to Pace or Tostitos and those guys, but among smallest companies in the salsa field, we are one of the more significant players," said Doug Renfro, company president.
The family-run company saw sales slip in late 2008 and early 2009, but acted quickly to stablize.
"Let's cut expenses before we cut employees," said Becky Renfro Borbolla, vice president.
Borbolla said the strategy worked, and profit is up again.
Mrs. Renfro's celebrates 70 years of business in 2010 with a recipe contest that kicks off this month. Specially marked jars of salsa will advertise the contest to customers.
"I get recipes sent to me all the time, and now I'm like, 'We can turn it into a fun contest,'" Borbolla said.
Winners will get Mrs. Renfro souvenir products. The grand prize recipe will be published on Mrs. Renfro's jars of salsa.
