Sports fans in Dallas-Fort Worth have a brand new haven to discover as Draft Picks Sports Bar & Grill has opened just outside downtown Dallas' West End in the historic Brewery Building in the location that previously housed Newport's Seafood.
Many of the area's so-called "sports bars" are basically dive bars with several TVs and a very limited menu -- if they offer food at all.
Draft Picks is more of a modern aged sports-themed restaurant that offers a diverse menu ranging from bacon wrapped shrimp to chicken and waffles and chicken pot pie. The dessert menu even includes Creme Brulee. Not to worry, the new spot also has the traditional favorites such as wings, burgers and chicken fried steak.
My favorite aspect of Draft Picks is the stadium seating setup facing the 220-inch screen that struck me as pure genius. It provides the atmosphere of being at an event without having people practically sitting on top of you as you would find at a traditional eatery.
There are three VIP areas with couches and flat-screens tuned to the programming of your choice.
The individually decorated rooms are reserved under their names of "Maker's Mark," "Jim Beam," or "Hornitos." With sports fans in mind from the beginning of the design, there are 60-inch flat-screens to ensure that every table has a view of the action.
Beyond the main area of the massive restaurant is a game area that includes Golden Tee and a cool bar area that should draw a hip "Dallas" crowd no matter what sporting event is on the big screen or taking place a few blocks away at American Airlines Center. A rooftop patio area featuring a great view of the Dallas skyline is also in the works.
"Happy Hour" is weekdays from 4 to 7 p.m. featuring $2.50 domestics and $4 wells. There are also daily themed specials including $2 Tuesdays with $2 tacos and domestics all day and Throwback Thursdays featuring music exclusively from the '90s. Valet and self parking are available.
