Frozen Treats to Beat the Heat

Our favorite warm-weather treats to help you beat the heat

Over the next few weeks, the forecast will go from warm to warmer to "hot enough for ya?" faster than you can say “heat index.” To help you keep your cool, we’ve compiled a list of our favorite frozen treats across the Metroplex.

Beyond the same old standbys, many of the items on this chilly list might just surprise you.  Not that we’ve got anything against tradition, but it’s gonna take more than soft-serve and popsicles to get through the next five months.

Adult Milkshakes
Twisted Root Burger Co.
With three locations now open (and a fourth on the way), Twisted Root Burger Co. is becoming quite a local empire.  The Food Network fave is known for bodacious burgers, but it’s their spiked shakes we’ll crave as temps soar to triple-digit territory.  Available in Banana-Bailey’s and Amaretto-Oreo flavors, they’re $6.99 each.

DIY Fro-Yo
Cassie’s Frozen Yogurt
Candy-colored Cassie’s is cute as a button, and this Grapevine gem’s fro-yo selection goes way beyond most chains.  Try kiwi-strawberry, cheesecake, peach or sugar-free pecan praline (just to name a few), then choose from 42 available toppings to gild the lily.  Also nice is Cassie’s price – just 39-cents an ounce.

Homemade Frozen Custard
Wild About Harry’s
No wonder so many folks go wild for Wild About Harry’s.  Since 1996, this popular little spot’s been stirring up Harry’s mom’s own recipe for frozen custard, batch by batch, every single day.  Flavors may vary depending on demand, but you’ll usually find chocolate, vanilla, coconut, cinnamon and a few other tempting choices.  A single dip is $2.79, but for $3.89 you can make it a double.

Clever Blends
Kenny’s Burger Joint
This Frisco fave is also getting in on the grown-up shake action with concoctions like The Naughty Mommy, The Attitude Changer and the Insomniac.  All feature premium liquors and cool ice cream blended in creative combinations to help you chill out in more ways than one.  Sip one and see for yourself for $6.99.

Ice Cream Sammies
Pokey O’s Cookies & Ice Cream
Fifteen flavors of Blue Bell plus 13 kinds of fresh baked cookies equals over 3,000 possible ice cream sandwich combinations.  At least, that’s what the folks at Pokey O’s say, and we’re really glad they did the math for us.  Pick your own personal dynamic duo for $3.49 or feed a crowd with an Ice Cream Cookie Cake for $24.99.

Triple-Threat Chocolate Malt
The Purple Cow
With locations in Dallas, Fort Worth, Plano and Fairview, you’re never far from this kid-friendly café.  The Purple Cow’s a full-on restaurant, serving everything from burgers and dogs to grilled tilapia, but no matter what you’re in the mood for, you’ll want to save room for a Triple Threat Chocolate Malt.  This one’s a chocoholic’s dream come true, with chocolate ice cream, chocolate syrup and shaved white chocolate for $4.35.  Craving?  What craving?
