Shopping for teenagers sounds tricky, right? Not for Kristin Skilling of Buy Request. The talented and presumably patient Skilling is a personal shopper specializing in the sought after and style savvy demographic, and she shared her expert advice for outfitting the youthful set with us during a recent chat.
NBCDFW: What are the Fall must-haves for the back-to-school crowd?
Skilling: "Some things never change, and the backpack, or 'schoolbag,' as my clients like to call it is still top of the list when it comes to sourcing things for clients. Whether you have a strict dress uniform, or free to dress your heart’s desires, this staple allows teens to state their style in a subtle way. I get creative when on the hunt for a 'schoolbag.' I scope out traditional backpacks, messenger bags, vintage leather bowling bags, and even the grocery stores! My very favorite find of the season has been the Marc by Marc Jacobs canvas bags. More specifically, the diaper bag …it's by far the very best, most functional school book bag ever!"
NBCDFW: What are the footwear favorites for teens?
Skiling: "Years ago I darted off to high school in my favorite neon-trimmed tennies. I like seeing the trend reemerge, and for the boys, neon sneakers are in once again, along with boat-shoes and Toms. For the girls, it's all about leopard-print flats, and colorful wellies. Personally, I rock my boots year round, and naturally I’m mad for this Fall's classic, riding, wedge, lace-up, buckle-up, and suede boots! The bootie is another favorite for me and my clients."
NBCDFW: Since it's homecoming season and sorority socials are also in full-swing, where are the top shops to find perfect frocks?
Skilling: "In the three years I’ve been working as stylist, Nordstrom has been my never-fail place to source dresses for my clients' special occasions. Other go-to spots are L. Bartlett in the West Village; Melanie Gayle, Cotton Island, Spice and Spice, each located in Snyder Plaza, and Tootsies and Cabana in University Park. For my own wardrobe planning, I adore Elle by Elements."
NBCDFW: What are the essential wardrobe builders for clients of all ages?
Skilling: "Perfectly fitted under garments. You may think you know what your doing, but go get fitted by a pro, and I guarantee you will walk away feeling secretly sexy. Since it's Texas, every lady should also have at least one fantastic fitting jean. Collecting diverse accessories is always critical to developing and defining your personal style, and lastly, make sure that no matter your lifestyle, age, personal life, or profession, your wardrobe should reflect who you are and where you're going! Style is the collective body of who you are, and you are, by far, the most important element in making your wardrobe special."
