Feds Shut Down 82 Counterfeit Websites

The Justice Department and Homeland Security have seized and shut down 82 domains for selling counterfeits—because knock-offs aren't just fake, they're a matter of national security.

The undercover sweep exposed sites selling copies of trademarked designs from brands like Uggs, Burberry, Coach, Timberland, Rolex, Louis Vuitton, Nike, Oakley and Tag Heuer, WWD reports. Visitors to any one of the sites will find a message indicating that it's been shut down by the Feds.

At the same time, Congress has a bill in the works that would support more of such operations, expediting the process to stamp out intellectual property theft and fraud by counterfeiters.

The sting comes just as the holiday shopping season gets underway and the quest for a good deal becomes a relentless one. Attorney General Eric Holder has some solid shopping advice to offer, though: "If a deal seems too good to be true, it probably is."
