We just shared our top five Fall trends with you, and now we're filling you in on which Summer wardrobe staples will stay relevant for the season ahead. Find out what items will carry you forward into Fall, what pieces you should put in storage, and what trends to toss for good.
Carry On: Blazers and longer cardigans
The major menswear trend for Fall makes these items invaluable. Put Away: Any jackets and sweaters overly feminine details. While the classic, soft look is somewhat perennial, this Fall is all about a more severe aesthetic. Toss It: Any toppers that are super-cropped or overly shrunken. Ultra-abbreviated jackets weren't particularly flattering, even when the trend was everywhere, and we suggest you ditch the look to keep your style current.
Carry On: Luxe leather items
The rich fabrics seen on Fall runways include any and every version of leather and suede, as well as fur, feathers, and diverse skins. Put Away: Other heavy pieces, like the surprisingly sexy, stretch corduroy skinnys from season's past. This Fall, it's all about edgy leather. Toss It: Anything you'd define as "pleather." There are far too many well-priced leather goods on racks this Fall to hang onto such uncomfortable items.
Carry On: Color-blocked dresses and tops
The city chic color trend is still dominant for Fall, just add patterned tights and interesting elements like leopard bags or snakeskin platforms. Put Away: Ikat-printed pieces. Though the exotically-printed items maintain their relevancy as vacation staples, the look is out for this Fall, having been replaced by diverse prints including polka dots, plaids, and stripes. Toss It: Logo-printed items. Pieces that boldly proclaim their brand name are so 2,000, and we know you don't want to be a fashion has-been.
Carry On: All animal prints
The most dominant trend of the decade is till strong for Fall. Rock your leopard and your snakeskin all season long. Put Away: Any animal-inspired pieces with a large-scale pattern; this Fall's collection of animal prints encompass smaller, more subtle takes on the trend. Toss It: Zebra patterns. Of all the fashionably ubiquitous animal-prints, zebra has been cut from the herd, and for good reason. The wide-striped, zebra fabrics simply aren't flattering.
Carry On: Modified high-hemlines
While the Fall collections showed a wide-array of hem lengths, abbreviated skirts and shorts still have legs this season. Put Away: Short items that are overly bohemian or 70s-inspired; the Fall trends are more structured and polished, though a relaxed look will always have a place in our wardrobe. Toss It: Booty shorts and skirts. The opposite of chic, an overly-abbreviated item is not a trend, unless you're cheering for the Cowboys.
