Mower's winning design is a one-shoulder dress of chiffon, satin, and organza.

Besting a formidable group of contenders (all older, all female), 11-year-old fashion prodigy Grant Mower of Flower Mound was named the winner of Terry Costa’s Catwalk Designer Competition on Monday.

This first-ever event at the Preston Road bridal and formal wear boutique combined judging by a group of local industry professionals and voting by the general public. Mower’s winning look will be produced by Nick Yeah of Impression Bridal and XCite/Xtreme Prom. It will be available at Terry Costa for the 2012 prom season.

Mower explained via phone Tuesday that he was caught off-guard by the news, coming as it did during an afternoon football game with a few of his friends. Once he caught his breath, however, he realized, “It was a pretty good victory!”

Fascinated by fashion for as long as he can remember, the middle schooler has big plans for his future. “I don't just want to be a fashion designer,” he says. “I want to be a haute couturier."

Idolizing Karl Lagerfeld, Mower pours over runway looks from Chanel and Fendi (after he finishes his homework, we presume).  To that end, we asked this up-and-comer to name a few of his favorite trends for the fall season. His picks include fur, the color black, and anything “with a sheen”. You heard it here first.

We first ran into Mower at Tim Gunn's Liz Clairborne show, where he caught our eye and jumped into our Local Looks gallery for that week.
