Worth the Drive: Schulenburg Texas Festival

If you have a thing for small Texas towns, Texas wine and Texas music, this weekend might be a good weekend to do a little exploring before the madness of Super Bowl XLV completely descends on North Texas.

This weekend Schulenburg, a small town of about 2,700 nestled along Interstate 10 between San Antonio and Houston, hosts their annual What I Like About Texas festival.

The festival is held in Schulenburg's historic downtown and allows Texans and non-Texans alike to sip on Texas wine while looking at Texas art while listening to Texas music.

Talk about immersion! We're confident there will also be a liberal selection of Texas beers on hand -- Preferably Shiner Bock or Lone Star.  Just my two cents.

Anyhow, in addition to looking over some local artwork and a silent auction, where said artwork can be purchased, there are horse-drawn wagon rides, photos with longhorns and a cowboy chuck wagon camp. Plenty of family fun to be had by all.  And not one Roman numeral in sight!

Headlining the showcase will be The John Evans Band, a rockabilly band out of Houston. The festival runs from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Saturday.  The wine trail starts at 6 p.m. and should wrap up by 8 p.m.  Admission is free, though the wine tasting is $20 per taster.

You'll need a place to lay your head for the night and there are a few national chain hotels in town that'd be happy to accomodate you -- but there are also quite a few mom and pop B&Bs available that might make the trip a little more enjoyable.  See a list here.

To get to Schulenburg, take Interstate 35 south to Waco, take the Waco loop on the south end of town east and then hit US 77 south to Schulenburg.  It'll take about 4 hours or so one way.  If you go, send us pictures at iSee@nbcdfw.com.
