5/21: Roads to Greatness

No matter where you go tonight, you can say you were there first.

GOING UP: Do you ever wonder where people found their next musical infatuation before American Idol? They found them in coffee shops, small clubs and by genuine word of mouth; and that’s exactly the road that Sahara Smith has traveled. This native Texan may be young in years, but her songs and voice tell of something much wiser than her age might lead you to believe. With a new album being recorded with renowned producer T-Bone Burnett -- who’s worked with The Wallflowers, Robert Plant/Allison Krauss and Elvis Costello, just to scratch the surface -- her small club days are on their way to being a distant memory. Be sure to catch Ms. Smith as she opens for Mason Jennings tonight at the Granada Theater. Doors at 7PM.

SHUTTER BUGS: No matter what Ashton Kutcher may want you to believe, the art of capturing a truly great photograph is not as simple as pointing and clicking. Thankfully Bella Bee Photography at 1208 W. Magnolia Ave. in Fort Worth has come to our red-eyed rescue with professional photography for any occasion. Come out tonight for their open house with refreshments, light hors d’oeuvres, door prizes and free portrait sessions. As a bonus if you’re planning a wedding, Scampi’s Catering and Bar ServicesCréme de la Créme, Bliss Bridal Salon, Kris Events, The Marquis on Magnolia and Philip Combs Designs among others will be available to chat with you in a no-pressure setting. 6PM to 9PM.

DEVASTATINGLY BEAUTIFUL: No matter what side of the contemplative coin you fall on, there is one thing that everyone can agree on about the music of Doug Burr. It is deeply personal, yet has the capacity to reach it’s listener at their individual need. With 2009’s The Shawl, Burr proved that the ancient and sacred texts of the Psalms are as relevant on the stages of smoky clubs as in King David’s court. Now comes the CD release of O Ye Devastator, possibly his most beautiful to date. Don’t miss this opportunity to see one of Denton’s finest performers in one of the cities most intimate venues, Dan’s Silverleaf. Doors at 8PM.
