8/31: Brain Power

A Cowboy's health chat, chili pepper face off, and dollar day farewell

MIND OVER MATTER: If you play sports (especially football) than you know getting hit is just part of the game. Today, attend Rebound and Recovery: A Concussion Discussion that addresses how to treat head trauma and maintain proper brain function with former Dallas Cowboys star Daryl “Moose” Johnston. Who better to educate you about how to recover after getting knocked out than a pro athlete? Well, besides the obvious doctor. Johnston’s been knocked around a few times, so he knows what he’s talking about. Whether you’re into sports and get pushed around for a living, or just want to know how to properly treat a concussion visit the Center for Brain Health tonight at 7 p.m. where a panel of doctors and sports folks will gather for some health talk. FLAMING CHILE COMPETITION: Know any good Hatch Chile recipes? No? Well, we know exactly where you can go for some good ones – the 15th Annual Hatch Chile Festival! It’s the last day to feel the sizzle of a roasted pepper in your mouth prepared by cooking veterans. Stop by Central Market in Plano for the final event in the festival. The (Dun Dunna) Hatch Quick Fire Challenge where Chef Allen Smith and Chef Daniel Stewart will duke it out in the pepper kitchen with only one will being crowned Hatch chile “Top Chef.” The cook off is from 6:30 p.m. until 9 p.m. and the tickets for this fire roasted event are 50 bucks. Pricey – yes, but at least you will leave this battle with a belly full of peppers.

GOODBYE AUGUST: As (hopefully) the last days of summer approach, so does the end of the Dallas Arboretum Dollar Days. Sigh. Today is your last chance to explore the scenic wonder of nature on the last day of August. For only $1 stroll through the botanical gardens and soak in the sun, because these high temps are slowly reaching normal digits. Along with admission, the Dallas Arboretum offers exclusive dollar discounts inside. For a laid back day out, why not discover a Koi Pond while sipping on a refreshing glass of iced tea and welcome September with ease.
