8/30: Art House

Artistic wonder stretches from Dallas to Denton tonight

SKUNKGRASS SOUNDOFF: Denton is known for breeding musical talent in eclectic genres. You can add a new one to the tally – skunkgrass. The unique blend of old-time, fastgrass, gospel and metal are behind the whole skunkgrass craze fine-tuned by North Texas’ own Boxcar Bandits. The band’s first album “Smells Like Grass” was released in 2008. And since then the band has been on the road with their Southeast summer tour, but you can still hear the Bandits play at any local joint in Denton. Tonight, ditch the Monday norm and head to the “Little D” for an education from Boxcar Bandits in skunkgrass sound at Dan’s Silverleaf in Denton 10 p.m.

BABY’S DAY OUT: For a mid-day Monday pick-me-up both mother and baby can enjoy, load up the strollers and diaper bags for story time at the mall. Atmos Energy offers an afternoon full of nursery rhymes for moms and infants up to 24 months at Bookmarks in NorthPark Center.  The hands-on activity-filled day can be a nice break from the usual and give moms a chance to catch up on window shopping. The tiny tots stories begin at 12:30 p.m.

DRINK OF ART: The Magnolia Theatre has an old Hollywood artistic feel to it, what with showcasing a variety of independent films in the sophisticated West Village and all. Well, adding to the artsy panache of the theater is the Magnolia Gallery that features exhibits from talented local artists. Jonathan Brooks is the current Dallas artist on display at the Magnolia with his new mixed media works entitled “taking in”.  Brooks’ recent work focuses on using objects he has stumbled upon, “I give those objects a home in my art, and watch the relationship between them evolve.” Take in as much art as possible from Brooks at the Magnolia, now until Sept. 22.
