RISE TO THE TOP: You want to know about struggle and success? Come to Bass Hall tonight. In just three years, singer/songwriter Mat Kearney went from sleeping on a friend's couch to performing at Madison Square Garden. In 2007, the Oregon-born, Nashville-based artist scored a string of coffeehouse-rock singles -- including the enormous hit, "Nothing Left to Lose" that made him a star on VH1 and Billboard. Kearney returned last year with his second album, "City of Black & White," and an acoustic tour that will bring him to the intimate confines of McDavid Studio. Opening act the Jane Carrey Band is led by actor Jim Carrey's daughter, a guitar-playing chanteuse whose jazzy, country-rock gems are garnering comparisons to the work of Norah Jones and Feist. Show starts at 8 p.m.

MULLED, MULLED WINE: Tonight Bard's Crossing will be at Pearl at Commerce. Pearl is a neighborhood bar and live music venue located in a 100 year old building in downtown Dallas, Texas. They present primarily jazz and blues from local, regional and national acts. What Bard's Crossing has done is let the master poets of olden days be their inspiration, and set their enduring work to fresh original musical arrangements, allowing timeless stories to gain new relevancy. The crossroads of the ancient and the modern. The intersection of music and poetry. It can be surprising how little has changed in the human experience in 400 years! Or 4000 for that matter!

A LITTLE QT: If you're looking for a way to spend a little more quality time with your children before they go back to school then today at the Modern Art Museum of Ft. Worth has a great way to do it with their Summer Kids Series. Share the art of the screen as you watch stories unfold and ideas form in delightful and innovative films. The bonus for seeing these films at the Modern is the opportunity to visit the galleries before or after each film. Beautiful sketchbooks are available for children of all ages free at the front desk.
