12/9: Fine Cheese

ACTIN' A FOOL: Upstart Productions wouldn't throw a holiday fundraiser without a sufficiently theatrical party plan. See some Dallas actors compete in a Rockstar Karaoke contest, complete with live band, and take advantage of happy hour prices while alt-country outfit Somebody's Darling plays. Tickets are $10 to benefit the group of up-and-coming thespians. Bryan Street Tavern, 7:30PM.

VOX JACKPOT: See Manhattan Transfer with the New York Voices at the Winspear for a top-tiered example in vocalese, which only sounds like a foreign language -- artists as popular and timeless as Ella Fitzgerald wove it in to their tunes. It's the discipline of singing lyrics syllabically to improvised instrumentals -- and it's part of an attempt to school DFW-ites in the wonders of jazz via the Jazz Roots series. 8PM. Find tickets here.

SKA-TERRED MEMORIES: You might remember every word. No choice but to own it. Reminisce with Less Than Jake and the help of 15 years of Warped Tour footage at the Granada Theatre. Cage and the Swellers open the show, which includes a preview of the festival's 15th Anniversary DVD. 6PM. Find tickets here.
