THE (DFW) PEOPLE’S PARADE: In honor of one of the most influential civil rights leaders of all time, we have a day to give back to our community and celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy. Today, the 25th annual M.L.K. DFW Elite News Parade and Festival will observe this holiday by bringing together over 200 local businesses and community leaders for a stroll through Fair Park. “The People’s Parade” begins at 10 a.m. and the festival featuring live entertainment, children’s activities, cultural displays and a fashion show lasts until 6 p.m. It’s free to attend, but its Fair Park, so bring about 10 bucks for parking.
CHAT WITH CIVIL RIGHTS ACTIVITISTS: For six years and counting, the Dallas Institute of Humanities and Culture commemorates M.L.K. Day with a seminar centering on one aspect of the civil rights movement. This year, hear what happened on the legal front tonight as the Dallas Institute hosts the 6th annual Martin Luther King Jr. Symposium at the Winspear Opera House. This year’s keynote speakers include veteran civil rights attorney Fred Gray, who was Dr. King’s first civil rights lawyer and senior analyst for CNN Jeffrey Toobin. General admission is $20 and $10 for teachers and students.
THEATRE PRESENCE: Enjoy a bit of theatre this evening watching one man rant about his life and misfortunes on the Studio Theatre stage at the Addison Theatre Center. “Thom Pain (Based on Nothing)” by Will Eno stars Stevens Walters as he stars as the man on a “quest for salvation” amidst all the world’s distractions. See why the New York Times calls the play, “A small masterpiece.” Tonight’s performance begins at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $20. The play runs through Jan. 29.
