11/19: Moscow on the Honky Tonk

A Nutcracker Ballet and Uncle Kracker

HOLIDAY TUTU TALENT: As the temps begin to drop and the Santas start to appear, the holiday nutcrackers are dusted off and put on display. Nutcrackers are quite busy during this time of year, practicing plies and perfect pirouettes, all while parading about in leotards – no wonder they need to rest up during the summer months. Good thing the Russians perfected the art of performance nutcracking. See the 18th annual Moscow Ballet’s Great Russian Nutcracker leap through Dallas this weekend at Fair Park Music Hall – with the first performance happening tonight at 7:30 p.m. This year, the classic tale has some new characters shaking things up, adding to the holiday experience.

ANOTHER GLASS, MERCI: Walk on the French wine side tonight at the 27th annual Beaujolais Wine Festival at the World Trade Center in Dallas. Thanks to DFW's French-American Chamber of Commerce, the grape-tasting celebration this year will also double as a whimsical masquerade. The masked sampling event will also give attendees the chance to browse some of the latest threads from Texas designer Darian Thomas, enjoy a little cabaret shimmy and a chance to bid in a silent auction. You may even get a photo op with the reigning Miss Texas. The night of fine wine and food lasts from 7 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Tickets are $55 per person.

VISIT WITH A DISTANT RELATIVE: Matt Shafer alias Uncle Kracker, has been sliding just under the musical radar for years, following the mass appeal of his “Double Wide” debut. His recent extended play album “Happy Hour: South River Road Sessions” grabs heart strings with its lyrics (one song dedicated to his daughter) and encourages foot-tappin’ rooted in a country sound. The Michigan native even teams up with best friend Kid Rock on the track “Good to Be Me.”  Hear the down home honky tonk sounds of a distant relative tonight at Billy Bob’s in Fort Worth. Tickets are $15, show starts at 10:30 p.m.
