10/19: Celebrating “Star Wars” Music

Myerson tribute to "Star Wars," Frightened Rabbit, and charity poker

LET THE FORCE BE WITH THE SYMPHONY: The Myerson Symphony Center is pulling out every piece of dusty soundtrack sheet music for its 25th anniversary season. Tonight, the symphony plays tunes that would make George Lucas (and sci-fi fans) proud by paying homage to “Star Wars” music – originally created by John Williams. The symphony will also play movie theme favorites and feature the Texas A&M University at Commerce Wind Ensemble Brass performing “Fanfare” from the epic saga. The evening of orchestrated sound begins at 8 p.m. (click here for tickets).

CLEVER LITTLE RABBIT:  The witty sounds of Scottish indie rock band Frightened Rabbit can be heard throughout Europe and the U.S. The band’s name was originally lead singer and guitarist Scott Hutchison’s solo stage nickname that stuck around when he the band officially formed in 2003. In 2006 they released their debut album “Sing the Greys” followed by “The Midnight Organ Fight” in 2008.  The first single “Swim Until You Can’t See Land” from the band’s latest album “The Winter of Mixed Drinks” (2010) picks up where the last album left off on some tracks and veers into a completely new upbeat direction with others. The addition of a fifth band mate may have caused a change in sound. Tonight catch the new sound wave that is Frightened Rabbit with Plants & Animals, Bad Veins at The Loft at 8:30 p.m.

PUT ON YOUR POKER FACE: Tonight bet a little cash and try out your best bluff when you play the Texas Hold ‘em Poker Tournament benefitting The Dallas Women’s Forum and The Alexander Mansion at Times Ten Cellars in Dallas. The charity poker event welcomes all level poker players to attend for the chance to win a 42” HDTV (with a $100 buy-in). All proceeds collected from the event benefit iconic reception venue – Alexander Mansion. The shuffling and dealing begins at 7 p.m.
