Denton Dispatches: Freebie Weekend

Quick's Big Thing is worth the foray down Interstate 35E Friday night. If you can't bear to veer off the access road, Denton islanders, there are still treasures to be had in town Friday and Saturday.

New music

Gutterth.com offers a preview of two tracks from Poison Culture, the fresh 7" from Dallas Observer Music Award nominees New Science Projects. The record's made its way to the sugar-purple Recycled Books Records Tapes in Denton and to Bill's Records and Good Records in Dallas. It'd be an adventure to head to J&Js Pizza for the release party, though -- chamber-folkies Dust Congress are set to play after returning from a tour of the southeast, and their jangly new record Regurgitate Sunshine State hasn't left our turntable. Get details on the show (no cover!) and on NSP's night of mayhem at WYDT.

New (old) stuff

We ran into Lisa McCullough, co-owner of supercute vintage shop Time Bandits, trapsing through the square with a bag of flyers announcing TB's Spring into Summer Sale. The coloful cotton skirts we've seen there aren't too pricey anyway -- some lovelies were less than $20 -- and some slim-pocketed boys we know have found Members Only jackets on the racks. So this weekend is an especially good time to Tim Gunn your closet and get funkier: TB's offering 30 percent off all clothing, 20 percent off shoes and accessories, and 10 percent off vinyl. The goods may be picked over by Saturday at 5 p.m., but that's when free vegan cookies and beer will come out 'till closing time. So, you know, it's worth a look.
