Green Your School Contest

The Student Conservation Association (SCA) recently launched the national “Green Your School” Contest.

This national competition, funded by the NBC Universal Foundation in connection with NBC Universal’s Green initiative, “Green is Universal” urges students in all U.S. high schools to submit their school’s best green-related projects for the chance to win a $5,000 grand prize.

The “Green Your School” contest is awarding prizes for conservation service projects designed by high school students that improve, restore, beautify and/or conserve their school’s environment.

To be eligible, projects must have been started after August 1, 2008. The Contest submission phase began on April 1, 2009, and will end at 10:59 pm CT October 9, 2009.
Winners will be announced on or around November 15, 2009. The contest is expected to engage conservation-minded students from urban to suburban, rural and tribal schools.

Project examples include transforming a school parking lot or yard into a community garden, implementing a recycling or compost program in the school cafeteria, using reusable and recyclable products on campus or establishing a system to reduce water and power usage.

Prizes

There will be one Grand Prize of $5,000 and two runner-up prizes of $2,500 each. Prizes will be awarded directly to high schools and not to individuals.

Guidelines

Entries will be judged by these criteria:

The project has or will improve the environmental health of the school (30 points)
The project is sustainable; i.e. either the project will continue and/or the impact on the school's environmental health will be a lasting one (30 points)
The project is initiated by students and engages other students, teachers and school administrators (30 points)
The submission itself is of high quality (10 points)
The project engaged the community (10 bonus points)

Include up to 10 photos and/or a link to a video [max 5 minutes] documenting your project.

Entries must be completed by a student and may be submitted online at http://www.thesca.org/green-your-school or you may request a registration form by calling 603-543-1700.

Mail submissions should be sent to SCA headquarters at 689 River Road, P.O. Box 550, Charlestown, New Hampshire 03603, and must be received by 10:59 CT October 9, 2009.
