Denton Ryan quarterback Scotty Young was named the Reebok Super Team Offensive Player of the Year in the 2009 edition of Dave Campbell's Texas Football, which hit newsstands last Monday.
The team is chosen by the magazine every year, and includes players from all classifications. There are 12 offensive and 12 defensive players to each team, and then a second and third team of the same size.
But Young stood out as the top player on the offensive side of the ball, and it's not hard to see why.
The Texas Tech commit threw for 4,495 yards last year in his first varsity season after starring for Ryan's JV squad in 2007. And oh yeah, he tossed 65 touchdown passes, which was just two shy of the state record held by former Ennis and Texas Tech great Graham Harrell.
Young did lose one his favorite receivers in D.J. Beshears, who earned a scholarship to Kansas, but does have another big-time target in Bud Sasser, who will be playing big-time college football next season as well, possibly with Young in Lubbock.
Young has everything you want in a big-time quarterback with his 6-3, 190-pound frame, which will sure grow by about 10-15 pounds by the time he steps on a college football field. He also has incredible arm strength, and hits the low 90s with his fastball on the mound for the Raiders.
