Denton Guyer Looking to Keep Momentum

Wildcats have makings of a special team in Class 4A Division I

When they went 12-3 last season and lost by 11 points in the Class 4A Division I state semifinal, the Denton Guyer Wildcats officially turned the corner.

The team that went 1-19 in its first two varsity seasons and was the laughing stock, whipping boy and anything else bad you can think of in District 5-4A, suddenly caught the Texas prep world by surprise last season en route to a Cinderella run through the playoffs that ended in Texas Stadium with a 41-30 loss to Longview.

In the bigger half of Class 4A (Division I), the competition in Guyer's region is extremely top-heavy, as the Wildcats will likely face the exact same road they did last season all the way until an expected rematch with Longview in the state semis. Longview will be atop many preseason state polls, and Guyer won't be far behind the Lobos.

Both teams have a well of talent returning, but Longview seems to have a bit more. It would be another classic matchup for a chance to go to the state championship game -- a game which either team would likely win. Guyer has the easier road with Wollforth Frenship posing then only real challenge before that semifinal game. The Wildcats beat Frenship in the state quarters last year after a game-winning field goal as time expired, completing a comeback from a 21-0 deficit.

Longview will have a much tougher road. Region II in Division I is loaded with strong teams. Aside from Longview, you have perennial powerhouse Highland Park, along with schools such as Dallas Carter and Waco Midway, a team Longview was lucky to beat in overtime in last year's postseason.

Regions III and IV don't really matter in the 4A Division I discussion, as Guyer and Longview will both be favorites to return for what would be an epic rematch.
