Owls Will Ride Phillips This Fall

Garland's Mr. Do-it-all top attraction at spring game

With spring games wrapping up this week, we take a look at a few more upcoming games in the next few days, starting with Garland's, which will feature running back/wide receiver/defensive back Adrian Phillips, who committed to play football at Texas back in February.

Thursday

Garland, 6 p.m.
Phillips did it all for the Owls last year en route to their rebound season with a 9-1 regular-season record and a trip three rounds deep into the postseason before bowing out to Round Rock Stony Point. That was after a disappointing 2007 season when the Owls changed to a spread offense out of their traditional power running game. Last season, he rushed for 865 yards and nine touchdowns while catching 18 balls for 401 yards and five more scores.

Mansfield, 6 p.m.
Coming off one of the best seasons in school history, the Mansfield Tigers are still riding the momentum of their three-game postseason last year after finishing the regular season with a 6-4 mark. They shocked the state in the first round when they beat state-ranked Abilene before losing in a shootout to Cedar Hill in the third round. They do lose running back Stephan Taylor, who signed in February with Stanford. Taylor led all DFW-area 5A rushers with nearly 2,500 yards and 33 touchdowns on the season.

Mesquite, Hanby Stadium
The Skeeters will have to replace quarterback Luke Halpin, who was a big source of offense last season despite only playing in seven of the team's 10 games, in which his team went 5-5.

Frisco Liberty, 6 p.m.
The Redhawks were respectable last year, going 5-5 as a young program and playing teams like Highland Park in nondistrict play. Plus, they beat Frisco and Frisco Wakeland, finishing a win over Frisco Centennial shy of the Frisco sweep. They did finish their season with two straight wins over Wakeland and McKinney to catapult into the spring.
