An NBC DFW series about a daughter's love for her mother and a story about the challenges of racial integration garnered two national journalism awards on Saturday night.
The National Association of Black Journalists honored NBC DFW at its annual Salute To Excellence Awards during NABJ's national convention in New Orleans, Louisiana.
NBC DFW Reporter Randy McIlwain won in the Television/General Assignment News: Short Form category for the story “Two Years of Hell.” McIlwain profiled the challenges faced by the first African-American women to integrate the University of North Texas. You can see the story here.
NBC DFW Anchor/Reporter Kristi Nelson won in Television/Feature: Long Form category for the series “Kristi’s Gift.” Last year, Nelson donated a kidney to her mother Helen. The series explored the point of view of both Nelson, her mother and factors that contribute to the epidemic of Kidney Disease in North Texas.
