Texas Lake Closed Over Mysterious, Floating Barrel

Barrel's contents to be tested

A Central Texas lake and popular recreational area was closed for several hours after a 55-gallon barrel with unknown material was found floating in the water.

The waters of Lake Pflugerville were evacuated after the barrel, which was labeled hazardous, was found around 3:30 p.m. Monday.

Officials with the city of Pflugerville re-opened the reservoir at around 6:30 p.m. after tests indicated there was no problem in the water supply. The reservoir provides water to area residents.

The Pflugerville Police Department is still investigating when and how the barrel was dropped into the lake and will continue to closely patrol the reservoir and surrounding area.

Officials say there is no indication of a leak in the barrel. Its contents will be tested.
