Pilot Accused of Aggravated Assault for Buzzing Boats

A 20-year-old pilot has landed in jail after allegedly buzzing some boats off South Texas.

Investigators in Willacy County say Rodolfo Gonzalez-Gonzalez of Mexico City, who recently earned his pilot's license, was in a single-engine plane and flying recklessly near Port Mansfield.

KRGV-TV reports he landed and was arrested Saturday on 13 counts of aggravated assault, with bond at $650,000. A jailer Tuesday confirmed the suspect was in custody, but declined to provide any additional information.

Authorities say Gonzalez-Gonzalez was in a rented plane and doing practice takeoffs and landings Saturday afternoon when he allegedly flew near several boats carrying a total of 13 people. Sheriff Larry Spence says some people jumped off the boats when they feared the vessels were about to be hit by the plane.
