Naked Man Detained After Wreck

Man being evaluated at JPS Hospital

People were stunned Friday when a naked man emerged from a wrecked Mercedes in the middle of downtown Fort Worth.

The man had apparently gone to a church in downtown earlier in the day, where he disrobed before running out to his car, police told NBC 5.

An NBC 5 viewer said he was almost hit by the driver as he sat at a traffic light at Throckmorton and 3rd streets.  As he caught up to the car, he said the driver crashed into the sidewalk curb, did a 180 degree spin and hit a backhoe.

As the car rolled onward, the viewer said the driver of the Mercedes got out of his car and started running down the road.

“I was sitting eating lunch at Oliver's and saw him leap from the car before it crashed into the lamp post,” Nina Carty, another NBC 5 viewer, said.

A bicycle officer caught up with the man and ordered him to the ground.  The confrontation was captured by an NBC 5 viewer on his cell phone. That video is being shared exclusively with NBC 5.  The viewer said he heard the man saying, “I’m not crazy, I’m not crazy,” as the officer waited for backup.

The naked man was detained and transported to John Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth for a mental evaluation.  He did not appear to have any injuries from the crash.

Police aren’t releasing the man’s name, but the vehicle’s license plates are registered to a man in Amarillo.
