Hallelujah! Jesus Saves Cashier From Gunman

Armed man tries to rob cell phone store, sermon gives him second thoughts

A Pompano Beach cell phone store cashier's sermon on Jesus saved her from an armed man intent on robbing the place, police said.

The incident happened last Friday morning at the MetroPCS store at 1543 South Cypress Road, as the cashier was alone in the store.

The unidentified gunman pretended to be interested in a purchase before branding a gun on employee Nayara Goncalves and demanding money from the cash register.

Little did the gunman know that Goncalves, 20, was armed herself: with the word of the Lord.

"Let me tell you about my God," Goncalves told the man while she was at gunpoint. "Jesus has a plan for you."

Goncalves and the gunman spoke about Jesus for about five minutes until the remorseful thief left without hurting her and without taking a dime. They even found out they go to the same church.

The man tells the sermoning cashier that he needed $300 to pay his rent or he would be evicted.

"I'm so sorry to do this to you," the gunman said as he backed out the store. "God bless you. Good will be coming to you for what you did here today."

Then the man reveals that he didn't even have a real gun. He had a pellet gun.

"Goncalves...remained remarkably calm. She told the suspect she wasn’t judging him and that 'Jesus [has] something way better for you,'" a news release from the Broward Sheriff's office says.

Police are still looking for the would-be robber, described as a white male with a mustache, about 5’9” tall and in his late 30’s or mid-40’s.

Anyone with information is asked to call Broward County CrimeStoppers at 954-493-TIPS.
