In New Orleans Mavs Win a Game, Honor a Premonition

The Mavs won a game Saturday night in New Orleans.  A security guard at the Pelicans’ arena won a championship ring. How’s that?

Seems that early in the 2011 season the Mavs played the then-Hornets in New Orleans when security guard Andre Menzies made a bold prediction to Mavs owner Mark Cuban. The Hornets (led then by Chris Paul) were 8-0; the Mavs 6-2.

“When we came here that year, he goes, ‘You’re going to win the championship. I already know it, I’m positive of it,’” Cuban told the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. “It was early in the season, and he goes, ‘If you win, do I get a ring?’ I said, ‘If we win, you’ll get a ring.’”

During the Mavs’ 109-104 victory over the Pelicans over the weekend, Menzies was sporting the ring, identical to the one worn by Mavs’ players from 2011 and even sporting his name.

“The only games I wear it are when the Mavericks play here,” said Menzies, who worked on pop star Michael Jackson’s security team for 17 years.

The experts are giving the Mavs similar long-shot chances to win a title this year as they did in 2011. Unfortunately, this time Menzies has no crystal basketball predictions.

Only thing that would diminish this feel-good story is if a sneaky and calculating Menzies made identical proclomations to every visiting team early in the season. Right?
