Fugitive Led Secret Life with Abducted Son: Police

Authorities say a former Texas man charged in a parental kidnapping case in the early 1990s lived for years under an assumed name in a rural upstate New York village where he raised his son.

Police in Medina tell The Daily News of Batavia that 58-year-old Daniel Lee Kestel was going by the name Paul Bambenek when he was arrested last Friday.

The FBI's San Antonio office says Kestel fled Texas with his then-1-year-old son Justin in June 1992 after picking up him up for a scheduled visitation.

Officials say Kestel raised his son as Zachary Bambenek in Medina, 33 miles northeast of Buffalo. The son, now 24, attends college in Rochester. His mother, Karen Hunter, hasn't seen him since he was kidnapped.

Kestel is being held Thursday in the Orleans County Jail pending extradition.
