A former Bexar County Democratic Party official is accused of embezzling more than $200,000 for his personal use.
A grand jury Wednesday indicted 55-year-old Dwayne Eugene Adams, who was party treasurer but resigned at the time the investigation into the thefts began in December 2009.
Adams is charged with theft between $100,000 and $200,000 and misapplication by a fiduciary between $100,000 and $200,000. Conviction on the second-degree felonies could lead to 20 years in prison.
Prosecutor Cliff Herberg says the investigation involves allegations of misused funds since November 2008.
An attorney for Adams, James Rickerson III, did not immediately comment.
The party's new treasurer, Joseph Nazaroff, says an updated system of checks and balances is meant to avoid future financial problems.
