Video gamers from all over the world are in North Texas this weekend at QuakeCon. It's the largest gaming convention in North America, but it didn't start out that way.
"It started in '96 with about 50 people gathering in Garland, Texas, at a Holiday Inn," says Marty Stratton, executive producer. "They knew each other from some chat channels and playing games, and 14 years later were over six thousand people."
From old and familiar games like Pac Man and Donkey Kong, to the latest and greatest games to hit the market, there's something for just about everyone. There's even a 96 hour, BYOC party where people bring their own laptops and play until they can't stay awake.
Mesquite-based id Software, makers of the Quake series, have often used QuakeCon to announce products or technologies -- this year they're showing off their latest tech with "Rage," iPhone versions of "Doom," and other new games like "Brink," "Wet," and a sequel to the "Wolfenstein" series.
The convention is being held at the Gaylord Texan this year. It's free and open 24 hours a day through Sunday at noon.
