Power rankings. You hate them. They’re so arbitrary and pointless, especially when they include all 32 NFL teams. All you want to know after a good week of NFL action is who the bestest team in the NFL right now, and which one is the absolute barrel-scraping worst. The one so terrible, it could have slipped out of Nancy Grace's top last night. That’s why we have TOP AND BOTTOM OF THE NFL, where we go to great lengths to tell you who’s the top dog in football right now, this very minute. LET’S GO!
THE TOP: Buffalo Bills
Oh, what a sweet weekend for the likes of Buffalo and Detroit. Not only did both teams vanquish longtime tormentors, but both teams also rallied from a deficit of at least 20 points, which is downright insane. Not only that, but the big wins by Oakland and Tampa on Sunday helped bolster the respective earlier victories that the Bills and Lions had over those clubs. What I found impressive about Buffalo, apart from the fact that they're doing this with Chan Gailey as their coach and assorted players gleaned from the local pawnbroker, was the secondary. Tom Brady strafed them, as he does to everyone. But I've rarely seen a secondary turn Brady into a turnover machine quite like that. And that was without Terrence McGee, their best cover man, and without Aaron Williams for the fourth quarter. Four different DBs picked off Brady in that game. The Bills have suddenly become a team that can take unheralded players and make them productive. Not unlike the team they just seized the AFC East lead from. Impressive.
THE BOTTOM: St. Louis Rams
I could put the Vikings here because of their astonishing trio of collapses to open the season. But hey, at least they play well in first halves. What do we make of this Rams squad? This was supposed to be the Rams' year. They were the only team in this division last season that showed any promise, and they had a gifted young passer coming back for his second season. An NFC West crown seemed preordained, and now everything has gone completely haywire. Only the Chiefs have a worse point differential than the Rams right now. And QB Sam Bradford's toe is ailing him. What on Earth went wrong here? Well now, I have a theory: JOSH MCDANIELS. Oh, yes. Think about it. He's the only major difference this year, IS HE NOT? I think Boy Genius now turns everything he touches to GARBAGE! I have no evidence to back this up, except for my strong dislike of Josh McDaniels. I feel that's proof enough
