Zach Shaver, 18, a football player for Tarleton State University in Stephenville died Monday morning, just two days after suffering a head injury during practice.

Shaver was airlifted to Harris Methodist Hospital in Fort Worth Saturday after he fell to the ground following a routine play, according to a statement on the Tarleton Web site.

There is still no word on Shaver's exact cause of death.

"Zach was a great young man, and I enjoyed watching him grow up over the years," said head coach Cary Fowler, on Tarleton.edu. "This is a very difficult time for the Shaver family and the Texan football family. Zach was a great person and teammate, and he was a pleasure to coach. We ask that everyone pray for his friends and family to help them through this difficult situation."

Fowler was previously the defensive coordinator at Midwestern State in Wichita Falls and knew the Fowler family well.  Shaver, a red-shirt freshman from Wichita Falls who played for Rider High School, joined the team last fall as a defensive lineman.

Shaver is survived by his parents, Robbie and Jennifer and his sister Emily. Funeral arrangements are pending.
