TCU's Sarah Scherer Finishes 8th in Women's 10m Air Rifle Final

Team USA takes first Rio gold in Air Rifle final

After earning 416.8 points in the 40-shot qualification round of the Women's 10m Air Rifle competition, TCU's Sarah Scherer finished 8th in her bid for a gold medal in the 2016 Rio Olympic Games on Saturday.

Four years before, Scherer finished 7th in the event at the London Games

Scherer's teammate, 19-year-old Virginia Thrasher, took brought home the first gold medal of the games with a score of 208 in the final.

China's Du Li (207) and defending London gold medalist Yi Siling (185.4) took silver and bronze, respectively.

In the final round, the shooters have 10 shots to build on their qualifying round score. The closer the shot is to the center target, the more points awarded and the highest score possible in each shot is 10.9. The shooters with the three highest cumulative scores from both the qualification and final rounds win medals.

Scherer was knocked out after her eighth shot, finishing in eighth place after securing only 78.6 points in the final.

This isn't her final event -- she'll have another shot at gold next week.
