Sunset High Girls Basketball Player Makes History

A member of the Sunset High School Girls Basketball team is having an impact in her community on and off the court.

Her name is Mercy Blanco, but she doesn't show any mercy on the court. She’s averaging 24 points, 13 rebounds and six assists per game.

Earlier this week Blanco was offered a full athletic scholarship to play basketball at the University of Arkansas Pine-Bluff.

Mercy is the first Hispanic girls basketball player from sunset to ever receive an offer to play division one basketball.

The 18-year-old and her coach say the offer represents a great opportunity to inspire others.

"I am glad I can be an example for others and make them strive for more," Blanco said.

Coach Kelan Jones called Blanco a "team player" and a "natural leader."

"She's also a great student," Jones said.

There is still time for other schools to offer Blanco a scholarship. She will likely make a decision soon.
