Southwest Senior Plays Football While Preparing for U.S. Army

Chris Ervin is not your typical high school football player.

"Every time we break the huddle, we say 'team first,' because that's what is important here," Ervin said. "It's also what's important in the Army."

The Southwest High School senior lineman is all about a football team on which he almost never played.

"I saw him in the hallways in the spring and convinced him to come out," Southwest head coach Robert Goebel said. "He brings leadership, and that is what is important to me."

Ervin learned to lead from the best, over the summer in South Carolina at basic training, preparing for a future in the United States Army.

"It was life changing," Ervin said. "I got to learn what it is like to be in the Army. Really, I got to learn what it is like to be a soldier."

"It's amazing and an honor to be his coach," Goebel said. "He's going to be something some day and make us proud."

Ervin and the Southwest Raiders are off to a 2-2 start to the football season. He plans to enroll at Texas A&M in the fall and enroll in the Corps of Cadets program in College Station before eventually joining the U.S. Army after school.
