Romo Making Solid MVP Case

DeMarco Murray is very arguably the most valuable player on the Dallas Cowboys' roster and is in the midst of a record-breaking season.

At least, that's the understandable perception when you look at Murray's insane numbers and the fact he leads the NFL in rushing by a whole, whole lot.

But Tony Romo might have the best case for MVP consideration, in the truest sense of the word.

Let's take a look at the Cowboys' losses this year. They came in the season opener with a rusty Romo trying to get his feet wet after not doing much at all in the preseason or even in training camp coming off two offseason back surgeries. Romo threw three first-half picks and dug an insurmountable hole.

Then, the Cowboys reeled off seven straight wins before losing to Washington in overtime in a game that saw Romo leave with what we later learned was two small fractures in his back. He returned, but was ineffective.

The next week, without Romo, the Cowboys lost to Arizona when backup quarterback Brandon Weeden laid a big, fat goose egg. Their other loss came on Thanksgiving Day when Romo was working on two days of preparation and without his customary day off mid-week.

The trend is pretty obvious here. When Romo plays and gets his day of rest, the Cowboys are basically unbeatable, and his numbers tell us why.

Look at his December stats, for instance, which have traditionally been bad and a good reason why Cowboys fans have grown tired of him. This year, they've been anything but bad.

In the Cowboys' three December games, Romo has been tremendous. He's completed 61 of his 77 pass attempts, thrown 10 touchdowns and has no interceptions. It's pretty safe to say there isn't a quarterback hotter than Romo at the moment, given Aaron Rodgers' recent struggles, and his season stats stack up with anyone in the league with his 3,406 yards, 32 touchdowns, eight picks and 70.3 completion percentage.

It might be hard to imagine, but maybe Murray isn't the MVP candidate from the Cowboys, after all.
