Reviewing The Stars 2016 NHL Draft Selections

The Stars spent their two days at the 2016 NHL Draft loading up for the future with six picks this year that included a goalie and Minnesota’s “Mr. Hockey.”  Let’s break it down…

Riley Tufte – Left Wing (First Round)

Tufte is the “Mr. Hockey” from Minneapolis, Minnesota. The 18-year old was selected Friday night by the Stars with their first round pick. The 6-foot-5, 205-pounder played for both Blaine High School in Minneapolis and the Fargo Force of the USHL in 2015-16. At the USHL level, he scored 10 goals in 27 games for 14 points, which was tied for fifth on the team.  Tufte, who was diagnosed with diabetes at age 11, has a mixture of size and skill which makes him an intriguing prospect.

Frederik Karlstrom – Center (Third Round)

The 18-year old played at three levels of AIK’s system in Sweden. The majority of the season was spent in the SuperElit League, where he recorded 33 points in 44 regular season games. Karlstrom also added 11 points in six games during the playoffs.

Rhett Gardner – Forward (Fourth Round)

The 20-year old freshman just completed his freshman season at North Dakota, scoring 11 goals and seven assists in 41 games. Gardner handles the puck at speed and is willing to throw his frame around.

Colton Point – Goaltender (Fifth Round)

Plenty has been said about how the goalie situation with the Stars is questionable at best, so it looks like Dallas went into this draft looking for a potential fit. The 18-year old Point played in 33 regular season games for Carleton Place of the CCHL last season. He had a 2.16 goals against average and a .915 save percentage during the regular season. The numbers were better in the playoffs, where it was a 1.82 goals against average with a .933 save percentage.

Nicholas Caamano – Right Wing (Fifth Round)

Caamano, only 17, appeared in 64 games for Flint of the Ontario Hockey League, where he scored 20 goals and had 17 assists. He’s spent the last two seasons in the OHL, appearing in 128 regular season games.

Jakob Stenqvist – Defenseman (Sixth Round)

Stenqvist played at three different levels in Sweden, finishing with 13 goals and 23 assists during the last season. He collected numerous awards for most points, assists and goals by a defenseman.
