Jurickson Profar, who just a couple of years ago was seen as the top prospect in all of baseball, is now set to miss his second consecutive full season after undergoing surgery to repair a torn shoulder labrum.
With Elvis Andrus locked up long term at shortstop, and Rougned Odor taking a massive step into relevancy at second base, and as a younger option than even Profar, the Rangers could be moving on from him.
Multiple reports from numerous outlets suggest the Rangers have been floating the idea of dealing Profar to the New York Mets for starting pitcher Dillon Gee. Of course, the Rangers' interest in Gee probably tapered some after they acquired Yovani Gallardo in January, but the fifth starter is still a question and there's always the concern of health, as we saw last season. So going after Gee shouldn't be out of the question.
The Cleburne native put up a 4.00 ERA in 137 1/3 innings last season before being shut down due to injury, but he appears to be 100 percent now. In 2013, he posted a 3.62 ERA, and he's a second-year arbitration eligible player after the 2015 season.
It might seem silly to give up on Profar now with his value seemingly at an all-time low, but at the same time if you could really get a big-league starter for him, why not? It'll be interesting to see if these rumors have any wings, and what happens with Profar's future with the club, as it appears Odor has passed him up.
